Custom Roman Shade and Stationary Panels for a Teen’s Bedroom in Armonk, NY

Custom Roman shade framed by stationary panels on nickel hardware in a teen's bedroom in Armonk, NY

A custom Roman shade and stationary side panels on nickel hardware give a teen’s bedroom in Armonk a tailored, finished window, with the panels framing the glass and closing off light leakage at the edges.

A tailored window for a teen’s room

A custom Roman shade and stationary panels dress the window of this Armonk teen’s bedroom, which sits under a sloped ceiling with a single window set into a deep blue wall. The goal was a custom soft treatment that looked finished and grown-up, and that kept light from sneaking in around the edges.

A teen’s room has to do a lot: it is a bedroom, a study, and a place to decompress, sometimes all in the same evening. The window treatment needed to handle bright afternoon light for homework, near-dark for sleeping in on weekends, and still look like it belonged in a room that is past kid decor.

Custom Roman shade with stationary panels

Westchester Window Fashions designed a custom Roman shade for the window, made by the local workrooms we rely on for ultra-customized work. The fabric has enough body to fold crisply when the shade is raised and to hang flat and calm when it is down, which is what makes a Roman read as tailored rather than improvised.

The workroom made the shade to the exact width of the glass, so the folds stack evenly and the bottom hem lands where it should, just at the sill. Stationary panels were hemmed to break just at the floor, the way drapery should. Because the panels never move, their fullness stays exactly as it was dressed, day after day.

Stationary panels on each side frame the window and cover the edges where light tends to leak in around a shade. That edge light is the difference between a room that feels dark at night and one that only mostly does. The panels close the gap visually and literally, without asking the shade to be something it is not.

Both sit on custom decorative hardware in brushed nickel, which adds a clean line across the top of the window against the blue wall. The nickel picks up the cooler notes in the paint and keeps the whole composition crisp, where a warmer metal would have fought the wall color.

The deep blue wall does real work in this design. Against it, the shade and panels read as a deliberate composition rather than window dressing, and the white ceiling line keeps the sloped ceiling from closing the room in. Window coverings also help a room hold its temperature; the U.S. Department of Energy notes that well-fitted coverings reduce the heat that moves through glass in both directions.

Soft, layered and finished

The finished window reads as layered and intentional, with the panels giving the room height and the Roman shade handling day-to-day light. It is a look the room can grow with: swap the bedding and the art over the years, and the window will still make sense.

That staying power was part of the brief. A treatment chosen for a teenager should still feel right when the teenager is twenty, and this one will. The shade raises in soft, even folds during the day and drops flat for the night, so the room shifts from study to sleep with one motion.

For homes in Armonk and across Westchester County, a Roman shade paired with stationary panels is a quiet way to add softness and better light control to a bedroom. Every project starts with a visit: we measure, look at the light, and talk through how the room is actually used before anything is chosen.
