Fabric the homeowner found on her travels abroad became double pinch pleat drapery for her Tarrytown living room, made by our workroom partners and set on a decorative gold traverse rod.
Double pinch pleat drapery in a fabric sourced abroad now dresses the living room of this Tarrytown home. The homeowner wanted custom drapes, and she already had the fabric. On her travels abroad she had sourced a textured, bronze-toned fabric she loved, and the goal was to turn it into drapery that did it justice.
Fabric with a history deserves patience. The weave had a subtle sheen and a dry, textured hand, the kind of material that rewards careful tailoring and punishes shortcuts. The room itself is warm, with wood tones and soft light, so the bronze fit naturally; the work was in giving it the structure to hang the way it deserved. She had carried it home carefully, and it had waited for the right room.
Westchester Window Fashions had the drapes made by our workroom partners, the local workrooms we rely on for ultra-customized work, in a double pinch pleat. The pleat gives the fabric crisp, even folds from top to floor and lets its sheen catch the light along each fold.
A double pinch pleat was the right call for this fabric. The pleats set the fullness at the top, so the folds fall in a regular rhythm all the way down, and the bronze sheen breaks gently at every fold instead of hanging as one flat panel. The texture she fell in love with abroad is what you see first in the room.
The drapes ride on a decorative traverse rod in gold, so they draw open and closed smoothly while the hardware adds a warm finish across the top of the window. A traverse rod was chosen for daily use: the fabric is never tugged by hand, which keeps the pleats crisp and the material wearing evenly for years. The gold finish was matched to the warm tones already in the room, so the rod reads as furniture, not hardware.
Drapery does quiet practical work too. Lined, full panels soften street sound and add a layer at the glass; the U.S. Department of Energy notes that well-chosen window coverings help regulate room temperature through both heating and cooling seasons.
The fabric she brought home now frames the room, tailored and full, with the gold hardware tying it to the warm wood in the space. Drawn closed in the evening, the drapes turn the window wall into a warm backdrop; open by day, they stack neatly at the sides and let the room fill with light.
It is the rare project where the material led every decision, and the room is better for it. What traveled home in a suitcase now holds the window as if the room had been designed around it all along. Friends who visit ask where the fabric came from, and the answer comes with the trip’s story, which is exactly what she wanted from the room.
For homes in Tarrytown and across Westchester County, custom drapery is a way to turn a fabric you love, wherever you found it, into a finished window. Every project starts with a visit: we measure, look at the light, and talk through how the room is actually used before anything is chosen.
