This Pelham kitchen was newly renovated and completely custom, from the white inset cabinetry and brass hardware to the marble island, glossy handmade-look tile and navy range with brass trim. Every surface was bright and clean. The windows needed something softer: a treatment that brought in texture and warmth without competing with the finishes or closing off the view of the yard.

Westchester Window Fashions chose Hunter Douglas woven wood shades in a light, natural weave. The warm tone picks up the wood floors and the brass on the faucet, range and cabinet hardware, and the texture sets off the smooth tile and painted cabinetry.

The same shade runs across the wide window over the farmhouse sink and the two smaller windows on either side of the range hood, so the room reads as one design. Each shade is mounted above the window trim with a matching valance across the top. Raised, the shades stack neatly above the glass and leave the view open. Lowered partway, the open weave filters the sun and cuts glare on the counters while the trees outside stay in sight.
