Motorized Alta banded shades – also known as zebra shades – replace heavy wood blinds on this Scarsdale living room’s window wall, shifting from sheer daylight to full privacy at the touch of a button.
Scarsdale motorized zebra shades gave this living room back its light. The room is built around a run of three wide windows overlooking the back garden, and for years the old wood blinds darkened the space and hid the view behind heavy slats. The homeowners wanted the light back: soft daylight and the garden by day, real privacy in the evening, without bulky treatments crowding a room furnished in soft whites.
The blinds had been the wrong answer for a long time. Their slats collected dust, their cords tangled, and even fully raised they stacked thickly over the top of the glass. A room with this much garden outside deserved windows that could open to it completely. Drapery was considered too, but panels would have stacked over the glass and stolen width from the view the room is built around.
Westchester Window Fashions chose motorized Alta banded shades for the full window wall. Banded shades – often called zebra shades – alternate sheer and solid fabric bands, so each shade shifts from an open, filtered view to full privacy as the bands align. The light-filtering fabric keeps the room bright even with the shades lowered.
One shade spans each of the three windows, so the wall reads as a rhythm of three even panels. The sheer bands align from window to window, so the whole wall shifts from open to closed in one smooth motion. In soft white, the fabric sits with the room’s palette instead of interrupting it, and the slim headrails keep the top of the window clean where the blinds used to pile up.
Motorization moves all three shades together from a remote or app, with no cords stretching across the wide spans and nothing to reach for behind the sofa. The shades travel evenly and stop together, so the bands align across the wall and the whole window moves as one. A schedule can lower the shades at dusk on its own, so privacy happens even when nobody is thinking about it.
With the bands open, the room keeps its garden view under soft, even light. The sheer strips take the edge off the afternoon sun without dimming the room, and the garden stays present through the day rather than framed behind slats. Aligned closed, the shades read as clean tailored panels and the room goes private. Raised, they disappear into slim headrails and the windows stand fully open to the yard.
The change the family notices most is how many ways the room can feel now. Bright and open for a weekend morning, filtered and calm for an afternoon, private and tailored at night, quiet and bright for a work call from the sofa: one wall of windows, three moods, no fuss. Even cleanup is simpler than the blinds ever were: the flat fabric dusts in one pass, and there are no slats to wipe one by one.
For homes in Scarsdale and across Westchester County, motorized banded shades are a clean way to bring flexible light and privacy to wide windows. Every project starts with a visit: we measure, look at the light, and talk through how the room is actually used before anything is chosen.
