Solar Screens for a Glass-Wrapped Guest Bedroom in Briarcliff Manor, NY

Hunter Douglas solar screens in a Briarcliff Manor guest bedroom

Hunter Douglas solar screens tame the harsh afternoon sun in a glass-wrapped Briarcliff Manor guest bedroom, cutting the glare while keeping the room bright, open, and connected to the trees outside.

Glass on three sides, and the afternoon sun

Solar screens for a glass-wrapped guest bedroom: this Briarcliff Manor room, part of a newly renovated contemporary home near Law Park, is wrapped in black-framed windows on three sides. The glass gives the room its openness, but by late afternoon the sun came in hard. The goal was not privacy and not darkness, just glare brought down to a comfortable level without losing the view.

A guest room asks for a particular kind of comfort. It should feel calm the moment someone walks in, and it should be easy for a guest to make the light right without instructions. Whatever went on these windows had to be simple to use and quiet to look at, on glass that is very much the point of the architecture. Heavy drapery would have fought the clean lines of the renovation; the windows asked for something that could disappear.

Hunter Douglas solar screens

Westchester Window Fashions chose Hunter Douglas solar screens in a deep chocolate fabric to sit naturally against the black window frames. Mounted inside the frame with a reverse roll, the shades stack cleanly at the top for a waterfall finish with no visible hardware. The screens soften the glare while keeping the room bright and the trees in view.

The chocolate fabric was chosen the way the frames were: as part of the room’s architecture. A lighter fabric would have floated on the black frames; the deep tone reads as an extension of them, so the glass wall keeps its crisp outline whether the screens are up or down. In the morning the room glows; by four in the afternoon it stays comfortable instead of glaring. From outside, the windows read as one composed whole.

The reverse roll matters here more than it might seem. With no valance in the design, the fabric falls cleanly from the front of the roller, and the shade hangs in one flat plane inside the frame. Nothing interrupts the line of the glass, and nothing collects dust on a hidden roll.

The shades run on Hunter Douglas PowerView Gen 3 motorization, so light levels adjust from an app or by voice, with no cords and nothing to reach for. A guest can lower the screens from bed, and the homeowners can set a schedule so the room takes care of itself through the afternoon.

Comfortable light, kept simple

The finished room holds its light where it should be: bright, open, and free of harsh sun through the afternoon. The chocolate fabric reads as part of the window architecture rather than something added to it. The trees stay in view, softened now, and the room keeps its easy, contemporary calm.

It is a room that works as hard as the rest of the renovation. Guests get light when they want it and relief when they need it, and the glass walls that sold the design still get to be the whole show. Raised, the screens vanish above the glass; lowered, they read as a single soft plane of color.

For homes in Briarcliff Manor and across Westchester County, custom solar screens are a quiet way to keep big glass livable. Every project starts with a visit: we measure, look at the light, and talk through how the room is actually used before anything is chosen.
